What is a celebrant?A celebrant is an individual that performs weddings and/or presides at ceremonies and rituals. The Celebrant Training Program develops the role of a celebrant primarily as someone who wants to provide their clients with a meaningful ceremony or service that reflects their own beliefs and spirituality.
What is your method of study?Your celebrant training is conducted completely online -- there are no registration deadlines or scheduled classes to attend. You will be given a syllabus and submit each assignment via email. Since there are no set registration dates and classroom attendance is not required, you can begin today and have the freedom to complete the celebrant training online at your own pace, whether you want complete your studies as soon as possible or need plenty of time.
Why should I choose this Celebrant Training Program? We have an outstanding program conducted by exceptionally qualified mentors who are professionals and have an abundance of experience in conducting weddings and other rites of passage. With our method of study, you will have one-on-one interaction with your mentor via email and telephone.
How long does It take to complete the program? Because our method of study is self-directive, the length of time it will take to complete the program depends upon how much time you can invest in the coursework. For example, if employed, it most likely will take longer than if you were not working. Some students take as long a a year, while others have completed their program within three months.
What will I learn from this program? You will able to perform wedding ceremonies, and/or funerals, as well as other rites of passage, in a loving and life-giving manner. You will learn how to work with your client(s) to design a ceremony that is meaningful to them. Rather than going through the motions of a service with a set script, your clients will have the opportunity to give input. In this way, you will be able to provide your clients with a personalized ceremony that resonates with their particular religious beliefs and/or spirituality. You will also be given the nuts and bolts involved, such as instruction related to presenting a ceremonial talk and information about marketing and licensing, etc.
Am I qualified? It is not necessary to hold a college degree in order to be accepted into this program. If you feel dedicated to serving others, helping individuals have meaningful wedding ceremonies as well as well as other rites of passage, and truly would like to make a difference in the world, then you are qualified.
Can I perform a ceremony legally? You can legally perform most ceremonies and rituals, such as funerals, same-sex commitment ceremonies in states where they do not hold legal status, and baptisms or other formal ceremonies to welcome a new-born child into a family. However, because of State laws, you cannot solemnize a marriage, i.e, you cannot sign a marriage license unless you are also certified by the state in which you preside. (Click here to see the marriage laws in your state.) See below for an option we offer to legally witness marriages.
Can I obtain a civil license to solemnize marriages? Our Celebrant Training Program meets the educational requirements of the Federation of Christian Ministries, which has the authority to commission individuals to legally perform weddings (applicants must meet all FCM requirements in ordered to be commissioned.) FCM is a interreligious national organization that supports people in ministry and also offers members an online directory to advertise their services (contact office for further information).
Does the Celebrant Training Program Offer Ordination? No, but we do offer a path to ordination through the Federation of Christian Ministries, an interfaith organization that commissions individuals to conduct ministerial services and ceremonies, including legally performing marriage ceremonies. Commissioning is essentially an “ordination,” the authorization to minister on behalf of FCM, and an affirmation by FCM that the commissioned person meets the criteria of FCM in recognizing its members.
What is my accomplishment for completing this program? Upon completion of our program, you will be a Global Ministries University-Certified Celebrant and receive a Certificate in Celebrancy from the University. This certificate will be accepted by the Federation of Christian Ministries for commissioning to legally witness marriages (certain requirements apply).
